Laguna José Ignacio

Laguna José Ignacio - Punta del Este

Laguna José Ignacio

This lagoon, as well as Laguna Garzón, has special caracteristics. They are different from the others because they have mixtured water. The reason is that they are usually connected to the ocean.

The lagoons are separated from the sea by a fragile sand strip which has opening and closing seasons. When the strip is open allows the water exchange and at the same time many fish and crustaceans come into the lagoon. the crustaceans come to complete their growth. Once they are grown they can reach a good size. At this time they are captured.

The strips have to be closed once the animals are in the lagoon to allow they growth. If they can not be closed naturally, the Intendencia staff and the area fishermen help to close it. Usually the opening season is in Spring (September) and the capture is between February and April.

The boats used in these kind of lagoons is the denominated ¨Chalanas¨ and usually built by the fishermen. The only way to fish is the fishing net, and to fish shrimps they use the swrimp-traps. This area is the ideal place to find fresh fish.
